with their own chill-out room, toilet, and free tea and coffee. The three
rooms range from £15-25/3 hour, and have a range of Marshall, Crate,
and Peavey amps and quality kits. A separate self-contained studio with a
digital 24-track desk costs £30/hour, although a live recording of three
songs can be simultaneously mixed and mastered to a fully-packaged CD for
£95. Strict no-smoking policy.

similar spec, with a Pearl kit and a mixture of Ampeg, Marshall, Peavey and
Roland amps, PA, MiniDisc and cassette recorders. Slots start at £ 10
and rise to a peak on evenings and weekends at £26/3 hours. There’s
vending machines and a lounge with a TV. Cymbals and keyboards can be hired
during rehearsals. Berkeley is large, efficiently run and enjoys a good reputation;
this means you have to book around a month in advance for a room.
Rehearsal Rooms 244, Gallowgate, Glasgow, 0141553 2515. You’d be forgiven for thinking
these rooms were once part of the famous market, they’re that grittily
Glaswegian. Rooms are of the same spec, with Pearl kits, Marshall, Trace Elliott,
and Peavey amps and cost £7/hour, with special rates on weekdays. Snacks
and drinks are available and there’s a TV and pool table. Equipment and
PA hire is also available.

a reliable stalwart. There’s a flat rate of £13/3 hours until 6pm
on weekdays, rising to £ 15 Sat daytime, and £20 for evenings
and all day Sun, although regulars might get discounts. All are similarly
equipped with Premier APK kits, Fender, Marshall and Peavey amps and PA. Recording
is~ also on offer, costing £150 for a nine-hour sixteen-track session
or £200 for ten hours of 24-track recording; both include mixing. Carlton
boasts a separate cafe.

Rehearsal Studios 19 Dalmarnock Road, Rutherglen, 0141 6131055. With more
rooms and a recording studio on their way, Clydeside’s single room boasts
a full setup of Fal, Laney, Peavey and Trace Elliot amps, a Pearl Export kit,
PA, 16 track live desk, MiniDisc player, two CD players and a Korg or Yamaha
keyboard. The flat rate is £20/3 hours, but a loyalty scheme credits
one free hour for every three hours booked. Tea and coffee is on tap, and
there’s a kickback lounge with a TV and PlayStations.
Studios 7 Osborne Street, Kings Court, Glasgow,
The former Brill Buildings has undergone a staff
buyout, and Core is the result with a full refurbishment
well underway. There are four rehearsal rooms of
similar spec ranging from £18 to £25,
featuring a variety of amps. Weekdays from 9am to
noon cost just £ 10, rising to £ 15
between noon and 6pm and there are also solo session
rates of £5/3 hours during the day. Two recording
suites are available for hire, both with 24-track
analogue desks to 2 inch tape. Studio one, where
Wet Wet Wet recorded ‘Love Is All Around’,
also has 16-track ProTools, costs £250/day
and features a 500ft-square live room with four
isolation booths. Studio two, with a separate live
room but without ProTools, can be yours for the
day for£175; and the live recorded demo mixed
straight to DAT for £80 on weekdays is an
option. There’s pool, table tennis, a drinks
machine and snacks as well as cymbal hire, and the
wee shop at reception sells all those things you
forgot to bring, from plectrums to straps.

room featuring Marshall and Trace Elliot amps, and a Pearl kit. The standard
rate is £24/3 hours, although this drops to £18 before 6pm on

amps, a Pearl kit. Prices are £21/3 hours
ill the evening or £15 during the day, although
there is a special first booking price of £13,
and a discount if two or more bookings are made
in a week. Full rehearsal facilities are also available
for DJs, with use of decks, needles, mixer and PA.
Lomond Studios The Griffon Centre, Vale Of Leven

A Princes Trust-affiliated organization, offering
music tuition in various disciplines. There’s
also a rehearsal room available from 9am~3am, offering
Marshall and Peavey amps, a Custom kit, PA and a
range of pedals, and, handily, leads are provided.
With a full backline of DJ equipment, budding Fatboys
can also hire out the room on Friday and Saturday
nights. This’ll set you back £20/3 hours,
although there are concessions during the day, particularly
if you’re under 17. You can have your session
recorded for an extra £ 10, or £50 for
a six-hour stint, and walk out with a CD of your
efforts. The studio also offers PA hire packages
for around £60/night.

mixing and a full-colour packaged CD. A portable
studio is also available. There’s free tea
and coffee, a lounge, and a range of snacks to buy.
